As a business owner I am committed to the concept of investing in the future. Part of that concept involves investing in an electrical engineer apprenticeship scheme. There has been a lot said both for and against the apprentice model of attaining qualifications. These range from the notion that an apprentice is a form of cheap labour and a second rate degree, through to the thought that is the modern way to approach gaining qualifications, skills, experience and knowledge in your chosen field.

I am firmly in the second camp and it is worth investing in our apprentices in order that they broaden their skill base. Working whilst learning is in some ways the fast track approach to becoming a top level electrical engineer.

Two of our apprentices have recently been enrolled on the Electrical Motors and Motor Control course offered by Wakefield Skill Centre. This course is specifically designed for electricians involved in the maintenance of industrial electrical equipment and systems. It is a comprehensive course looking at all aspects of electrical motors from theoretical principles, safe working practice, motor starters, speed controls, motor protection systems, fault diagnosis and practical exercises.

The feedback from the apprentices has been very positive and I am looking forward to taking them out into the field, showing them how to apply their learning.
